Gramophone Magazine enlists China Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) among the top 10 most influential orchestras in the world, together with Berliner Philharmoniker, New York Philharmonic and London Symphony Orchestra. In its 20 years of existence, under the Artistic Direction of world famous Chinese conductor Long Yu, CPO counts performances in some of the world’s most important Halls (Avery Fisher in New York, Philharmonie in Berlin, Musikverein in Vienna, among many others), collaborations with prestigious conductors and soloists (Charles Dutoit, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lang Lang, Mikhail Pletnev, Emanuel Ax, Itzhak Perlman, Nigel Kennedy, Sara Chang, Mischa Maisky, Placido Domingo, Renée Fleming a.o.) and commissions composers like Philipp Glass, Krzystof Penderecki and Tan Dun. The Athens concert is a part of the Mediterranean tour of CPO, that celebrates the 70 years of the People’s Republic of China, under the direction of Huang Yi, former assistant to Seiji Ozawa and director of CPO, and with Liu Rui as soloist.
